I know I could do it much better after everything I’ve learned this past year. Keep the speakers, keep the tweeters, keep the sub, get a better head unit, more powerful a mp, some mid-bass speakers underneath the rollbar... Someday!

While I LOVE the look of the Retrosound HU... After the honeymoon period I started to get annoyed by a few flaws. The volume and track change knobs have incredibly fine detents, so much so that when I try to skip a track, I’ll usually skip 3 or 4. Hell, the tracks will change just in normal driving from my cars vibrations! Guess it doesn’t really matter for volume, but it’s super annoying for the other knob. I want something with a meaty “click”, that takes a good amount of force to rotate. And heavy knurling on the knobs. Also, the track change knob will just straight-up stop working occasionally.

The problem with upgrading is there are basically zero head units that look decent without spending an insane amount of money. I think retrosound easily makes the best looking HU under $500, but other than that.... There’s one other retro style HU manufacturer I can think of and they seem to be garbage based of of reviews. Anyone want to buy me a nice McIntosh head unit? No...? Okay, how about this?

Okay, back to figuring out why my sub stopped working......

I quite like the Alpine unit that I put in my Subaru. It's simple and it works and it doesn't look super rice. Plus I can customize the colors to match my oem unit exactly and it dims properly. All of that and it has good power and was only like $100 from Crutchfield and included wiring harness and plastic thing. I've got a custom setup in the Miata too and it always has stupid problems too. I'm quite enjoying the thing that just works now.

Get something with Apple Carplay/Android Auto. They basically all look the same given the standardized interface from Apple or Google. And technically, it might even count as resto-mod :o)

I like the color customization on the retrosound but if I set it to match my other gauge colors it's too dim to see in sunlight :(

Does it not have an adjustable back light that turns on and off with the headlights? I have mine set to full dim with light switch off and full bright with light switch on. Seems to give me  proper light balance that way. I wish it was synced up to my gauge light dimmer switch but one can only dream. New cars with those stupid oem screens often have independent light control between gauges and the screen. Complete garbage for oem!!! Both the RF and the Chevy Cruze I have right now have that crap. Why on earth is the infotainment screen brightness always separated? I just want an easy way to dim it, not go through a bunch of menus to set it.

What’s the point of a ballin’ sound  system if it’s going in a Miata?

I wanted to be able to hear music with the top down. Sounds pretty good, even in the Miata! I
